Opening- Chloe Z

“She could have taken that lock off anytime she wanted. But she didn’t, because then her mum would put a bolt on the outside.”

The Power is a book with a strong presenting message with gender reversal roles. It opens with Roxy, who describes being locked in a cabinet. She’s been there before, but she doesn’t escape despite perfectly being able to. Instead she thinks ahead, realizing if she does escape once, the option will be taken away. To Roxy, the option of freedom is better than the chance at freedom itself. She favors the idea rather than the actual reality. This could be comparable to the overall concept of the novel, where the author explores a fictional scenario in which women suddenly gain this new power and strength; flipping the age-old power dynamic of men’s superiority over women. The opening scene reminds us of the differences between men and women, and makes the generalization of women’s entrapment by man
